Choosing a New Roof

We knew we were going to need to put a new roof on the house when we bought it 2.5 years ago. The current one is almost white and has weathered  (like a roof should) the elements since probably 20 years ago. We were trying to wait until it got cooler and maybe prices went down a little until we called someone for a quote, but we're finally just ready to get it out of the way and get it off our budget.

Last week we called a local roofing company to get a quote on when they could do it and for how much. They came quickly and told us they could get it done in one day and the price was in our budget. We prepared for the quote to be really high but hoped it would be less than we had planned for — it was only $200 less. We debated on getting other quotes but decided between this larger company or a self-made roofer, we'd feel safer and like we got better quality shingles if we went with the bigger company. The only cost savings we could see with a single roofer is in the quality of the shingles and we didn't want to skimp on that. These roofers even quoted us for taking off all the ugly, unnecessary vents and spiny-vent thing (I think it's called a turbine) off and replacing it with modern vents.

We decided to go with the larger company and get it done in two weeks. But I had to decide before then which shingles we wanted. They use GAF and told us to pick something in the Timberline section of products. Two stood out to me...

Choice 1: Slate

I know I want to stay on the darker side of things because the current roof is almost white and it looks terrible. As I was flipping through the booklet of shingles this Slate color jumped out at me as it was dark but not a completely black choice. I do like it. But the booklet says "just like regular slate, it has a green undertone." I put it on the house anyways to see what it would look like in the sun — it's definitely too green. It's a nice roof if you had a vinyl house but the green clashes with the redness of our brick and just makes it look more red when it's actually a nice brown.

I think Slate is out for me.

Choice 2: Charcoal

My first instinct was whatever their darkest option was. The roofing company rep suggested Charcoal since it was dark but not pitch black. My only hesitation was if it had enough variation in the shingle color that it wasn't completely black which can make a house look cheap really quickly. He told us it actually has a great variation of gray throughout.

I photoshoped it on to the house, and I'm pretty sure this is the one. It's neutral enough to let our brick be brown but also dark enough that if we ever painted the brick white it would look great.

Do you like the Charcoal look? After we get the roof on we need to paint all the windows, facia & soffits, and doors.Maybe even one day get around to making and putting some shingles up, but one step at a time.
