$100 Room Challenge | Week 4: The Shelves are Built!

I know most people I come across hate painting. I absolutely love it. All the prep work, the dry time, I love it all. I love the feeling that I can go to the store and get a $30 can of paint that will completely change a space. To top it off, I didn't have to spend $1 on this paint job. I used the leftover paint from our master bedroom remodel, a custom mix of Behr's Snow Fall.

Week 1: The Befores
Week 2: The Plans
Week 3: Empty Closet (and I Picked a Paint!)

The old 70's wallpapered shelves were easy to take out, and sadly the wood couldn't be salvaged. Once they were out I was able to patch up all the imperfections in the walls and caulk the support beams. Look at that mauve pink!

It took two coats to cover up all the pink but oh man was it worth it. The more times I paint walls white the more I want to paint everything white for the rest of time.

I left the existing support beams which are plain 2x4's Then it was as simple as to measure the length the boards needed to be and use the chop saw to make some cuts. I used regular 1x12" pine boards for the major shelf board.

The 1x12" wasn't thick enough for me so I used some 1x2" premium pine strips leftover from the hallway closet makeover. If you caught my stories you saw how I turned the boards longways and nailed it to the edge of the shelves to make them look thicker than they really are. (If you missed it the video is highlighted on my profile). Nail guns make projects infinitely easier, this is the one I use. I also used my multi tool to notch out the corners where the strips meet the side braces.

Next week is the reveal! Between now and then I have to stain the shelves, go through all the tools, and re-organize everything back into it's place. I haven't used much of the budget since there's not much required for the space, so the rest of my $40 is going towards organizing bins. Are you on track to finish soon?!

  7. I totally get your love of painting. There's just something therapeutic...unless I'm painting a ceiling and then it just hurts. You are so right about the white paint. Really makes your shelves pop. Going to check out how you made them look thicker right now.
