$100 Room Challenge | Week 5: Modern Hall Closet Reveal

January flew by (especially when you spend a week in another country) and the end of January means another $100 Room Challenge reveal. This season we refreshed our hall closet which is our main storage area in the house. In just 4 weeks we took our closet that became a catch-all for anything and everything and turned it into a functional space.

One of my favorite things about this challenge is that it forces you to clean out your space. 50% of the stuff in this closet were just there because I was either just too lazy to put it in the attic or it just didn't have a specified spot. Also, does anyone else have a problem accumulating jackets? Over the years I have regularly purged my closet, but have always left my outerwear untouched for some reason. This challenge gave me the excuse and extra push to go through my jackets and keep only the ones I absolutely love and wear on a regular basis. I'm reading this life changing bookon curating your closet...

I feel like this space actually has a function now. When we're looking for more toilet paper or extension cords, we know exactly where to look. That's almost priceless. And I purged so much crap out that I had extra space left on some shelves.

At first, I wasn't sure if the rolled up towel thing was going to work, but it is actually way easier to roll the towels than to fold them just right to fit on the shelf. I'll report back to how it works in a few months, but for the past week it has worked perfectly.  Why are Auston's towels all different? I have no idea.

The 1" thickness of the shelves wasn't enough for me so I added a 2" boarder around all the edges. It really just put the finishing touches on them and was super cheap to do ($6!). Plus I got to use my Christmas present for the first time so woot!

Now they look just a little thicker but still give me all the space we need between shelves.

I got the silver bucket for Christmas last year and have used it a handful of times. It is just too pretty to have under a bed so I knew this closet would be a great place to provide storage and show off it's pretty galvanized metal. It actually has our last name etched on one side.

I grabbed this black metal basket with a leather handle from Tuesday Morning a few months ago. Originally I had planned to put it in the living room but it just didn't fit in with our current layout. I think I've found it's new home for a while as it stores my scarves. I mean, that scarf tassel was just begging to be displayed and not laying on the top shelf of my clothes closet.

I got the small tapered black wire basket at the Dollar Spot at Target a year or so ago. I actually ran out of stuff to pt on the shelves so I stuck all my journals in there.

My old Target globe recently lost it's place in the office but has now found a cute resting place in the corner.

A weird thing I do is get all the unused toiletries from places we stay. Previously they all just say in a box in the closet but now they are proudly displayed in the hall and ready for our guests to take one when they need one. And it's actually kind of sweet to look at it and remember all the memories we made at those places.

I took the basket I got from Target for our Christmas tree and re-purposed it here for our dirty towels. No more dirty towels on the floor!

I knew I was on to something when I saw The Home Edit arrange their toilet paper in a basket just like I did for this shoot!

While I was perusing the aisles of Target for baskets, I laid my eyes on this beautiful acacia lazy Susan and knew it would be perfect for all my regularly used toiletries like shampoo, sunscreen, and extras. You can turn that baby until your heart's content or you find whatever you're looking for, you know, whatever comes first.

I used the biggest nesting basket from Ikea to house our small things like razors, contacts, and creams. The glass vase was sitting under my sink unused and I grabbed our two mini umbrellas we bought for Costa Rica and stuck them in there for easy access on rainy days.

My mom and sister made us a sweet honeymoon basket and since then I haven't found a good home for it. Now it stores all our larger toiletries like my shampoo stockpile (maybe I'm a shampoo/conditioner hoarder?) and hair dyes (maybe I'm a hair dye hoarder too?!). It works great being on the ground since we won't be accessing those guys very often.

We also buy toilet paper and paper towels by the millions so we store the rest of our stockpile on this shelf.

I scouted the Target sales for the entire month (and some of December even) waiting for the inevitable new year's home sale AND IT CAME in a glorious 30% fasion. I scooted down to Target and grabbed the baskets I had my eye on and used my extra 5% off with my Red card (seriously worth it). I came in under budget with only $4 to spare, woot woot!

Budget Spent:
Paint Sample, Seagull Gray - $3
Ikea baskets - $24 ($12 each)
Small Wire Basket - $18 ($28 orig. w/ 30% off Home + 5% off Red Card)
Large Wire Basket - $13 ($20 orig. w/ 30% off Home + 5% off Red Card)
Small Wicker Basket -  $23 ($36 orig. w/ 30% off Home + 5% off Red Card)
Lazy Suzan - $12
1"x 2" Pineboards - $6

TOTAL: $96

I realize not everyone has these supplies or decor items around the house, so I'm also going to include a budget of what those things would have costed so you can get a truer sense of how much this would cost without supplies.

Things I Already Had:
Rollers / Brush - $20
Frog tape - $11
Long level - $5 (Harbor Freight doesn't have good quality tools but their levels are awesome and budget friendly)
Caulk - $3
Pine boards - $40
Wood stain - $4
Circle Wicker Basket - $35
Glass Jars - $20 (?)

Total with things I already had: $234

So you can see how much easier this challenge is when you already have tools in your supply closet. BUT that doesn't mean you can't incrementally add to you supplies or tackle small parts of a room - this challenge is proof that it doesn't take gobs of cash to transform a space.

All in all, it was another successful challenge for this girl. And there are about 40 other participants this season and now you can swing by all their spaces and see their reveals. They are all incredible - trust me.
