$100 Room Challenge | Week 3: Cutting & Installing Shelves

I am so excited to finish this hall closet makeover. Partially because it has to be done soon and partially because I'm ready to get all the stuff out of the guest room. One more week of process photos then the reveal! Last week we got all of the walls painted and fauxlaped, this week I got all of the shelves cut and put in place. This is a short post, let's get into it.

Back in November, I started a project in the kitchen to more storage in the kitchen. For several reasons I decided mid-way through that it would be best to use MDF rather than pine, so that project was put on hold. But that left me with about 16' of unused wood sitting in my carport (shameless plug for our last $100 Room Challenge where we updated our carport). I had no idea if I'd use 12" planks anywhere but I kept them because we had already made cuts on them.

Thankfully, I didn't throw away the original boards that were painted pink, wallpapered and covered in tar. I used them as a guide for cutting the boards I already had. No measuring and remeasuring and hoping you made the right cut.

Sidenote: ladies don't be intimidated by power tools, but especially saws. If you use them safely, it opens up a whole new world. If you need some inspiration just visit the OG construction ladies themselves, Shanty 2 Chic.

Our hand-me-down miter saw is probably my #1 used tool. Here is my favorite miter saw for beginners, favorite budget miter saw, and favorite miter saw overall.

The cutting didn't take long, the big time suck was fine tuning the pieces because WE DON'T HAVE ONE STRAIGHT WALL.

I may make the shelves thicker and may stain them. But I'm kind of liking the light wood - thoughts?

On the list to do next week is to figure out how to conceal the return HVAC. I'm thinking about painting it white but also need to search my scrap wood pile and see if there's enough to cover the eyesore.

Budget Spent:
Paint Sample, Seagull Gray - $3

TOTAL: $3

Things I Already Had:
Rollers / Brush
Frog tape
Long level
Caulk
Pine boards

    1. I literally don't know how I used my handsaw for so long. Same! Just trying to determine if it fits into our house's style.

    1. I wasn't 100% in love with the layout at first, but the space is so weird it's really the only way to have that many shelves - which is what we need. But the new shelves are making it grow on me!

  7. I can't believe you only spent $3! That's insane. I think you can paint that return white and no one would be the wiser. Or cover it with the same wood you used as shelves and it would seem like a bench. I can't wait to see the final product!

    1. Ha! I'm savin all my $$ for the storage baskets lol. That's what I'm thinking too, I really don't want to spend the extra $ on more wood. Thanks!

  8. Ever since I caught the DIY bug, I've become a hoarder of furniture, scrap wood, paint and basically anything that might one day be repurposed. Now I need a place to store it all. Pantry is looking great. I too like the light wood but the dark stain may work better with your floors...

    1. YES!! I'm thinking the same with the stain, and even being cohesive with the rest of the house.

  9. Ummm... $3?! I feel like you're going to end up with a $10 Room Challenge :) As for the wood, I love a darker stain, but the natural wood looks pretty as well; and either way, it will look beautiful against your faux-lap. Also, I'm showing this post to my husband because he's sure if I touch a saw, I'll chop my arm off.

    1. HA! The rest of that $100 is going towards all the storage baskets lol. NO! I couldn't do most of the things I do without my saw. And I just used my Christmas nail gun for the first time this weekend and it is now my #2 tool!

  10. That's so smart to use your old shelves as a cutting guide! And it's looking great!

    1. I'm notorious for measuring twice and still not getting it right so I was all about getting a for sure measurement. Ha! Thanks!

  11. I really like the contrast of the light wood against the shiplap, but it'll be gorgeous either way! I LOVE your miter saw - I'm dying for one that will cut 12" boards! This is going to be great!

    1. Yes! Spending the extra $$ on a 12" blade is so worth it! Since this one is a handmedown I have my eye on a 12" sliding one. Thanks!

  12. I'm so with you on the miter saw! LOVE IT! I would be torn too on the light wood. It looks beautiful now but it would also look beautiful a little bit darker! Cannot wait to see what you decide!
