$100 Room Challenge Week 4 | Modern Half Bath Reveal

A day late, but this is the last week of the $100 Room Challenge and it's reveal day! We decided to redo our half bathroom that connects our master and guest bedrooms. The great thing about this challenge is that you can spend $100 to make the room a little more livable, but if you decide to do a full renovation you don't feel so bad because you haven't put a ton of money in it. See the previous 3 weeks to see how far this room has come in only a month.

Week 1 | The Half Bath Before
Week 2 | Painting the Tile
Week 3 | Open Shelving & Wall Paint

Here are the befores, and just imagine it 5x's grosser than it looks mainly because the floor was 50 years old. This space is very hard to photograph because it is so small, only 4' x 5', but hey I did my best to try to capture everything.

My biggest DIY (if you don't count replacing the floor) was building these open shelves. You can take a look at Week 3's post to see how I built/installed them.

This sconce is the deal of the challenge! I love Progress Lighting, they make modern fixtures for a great price, they also made the pendant over the sink in the kitchen. This is the single fixture from the Archie Collection, which is normally $45. I found it at Lowe's, but once I asked if they had any in stock the associate told me they didn't have any. No big deal, so can you order it for me? Nope, they are out of stock in the whole company. Alright, so I find it online and buy it. The next day I get a call from the company and they say they can't fulfill the order because the light is sold out so I have to get a refund. Meanwhile, I am going through the rainbow of emotions from mad to sad to annoyed because this light was perfect for the price. I go back to the original Lowe's and tell them what happened and after a little big of begging, I convince them to sell me the display light and they also take 10% off, which is listed for $20 so I got this guy for $17. WORTH IT.

This mirror we got for a STEAL, but not as good as the sconce. We headed down to the Cash Liquidations outlet in Forsyth, GA. They get old hotel furniture/accessories and sell them for way less. I snagged this pretty round frameless mirror for $20. You read that right, 20 BUCKS. If you've been shopping for mirrors you know how stinkin expensive the pretty (and big) ones can be. This one is about 27" in diameter.

Ever heard of Unsplash? It is the most amazing online free space for photographers to put their pictures for everyone to download. And it is totally free. That's where I got this beautiful Golden Gate Bridge photo and it is great quality and really beautiful. This towel ring is also cute and modern and only $15 at Home Depot.

I'm not too in love with the rug, so I'll probably look around for a better one. No offense Nate Burkus, you make amazing bathroom rugs, this one just isn't the one.

Even though I was trying to keep this bathroom simple, I couldn't help but put a personal touch on it. We had took these Paloroids the day of our wedding and used them as our cake toppers.

I think for $96 (not including the floor patch), we came out on the right side of things. It doesn't take large amounts of money to make your space feel better, just time and dedication.

CHALLENGE SUPPLIES
Had to Buy:
Tile paint - $6
Open shelving wood - $10
Sconce - $17
Towel hook - $15
Mirror (Similar) - $20
Small Mirror - $5
Frame - $11
Rug - $12

TOTAL: $96

Already Had:
Wood Stain - $4
Nickle Spray Paint - $7
Wall Paint (Sherwin Williams: Ice Cube) - $40

If you saw my Instastories this weekend you know that we came across a huge problem when we took the vinyl flooring up. The toilet had been leaking and started to rot out the floor. We hoped it had only gotten to the first few layers, but layer after layer it was just completely gone. In the end we had to cut out a fourth of the subfloor and replace it with 2 layers of 15/32" plywood which was the hardest part.

Once the 2 sheets were down, we applied a thin skimcoat of Feather Finish to level out everything. Luckily, we had a lot of the supplies from doing the kitchen floor tile. And then to top it off I came home to lay the tile and the sink had been dripping, so I had to wait for the skimcoat to dry again which put me off a whole day, basically everything was not going right for me to finish this project on time haha.

The next day everything was dry, and I was ready to start laying the VCT tile. It took about 3 hours mostly because the space is so small I could only do one row at a time and there wasn't room for someone to help. But it got done and then we could put the black tiles back.

Here's the breakdown of everything we had to buy and what we already had on hand. All in all, we didn't have to spend that much to fix this only $24, it was just labor and time. So if you include the floor cost with the normal room challenge cost, we ended up at $120. Not bad for having to replace a floor!

FLOOR
Had to Buy:
15/32" x 4' x 8' Plywood (for 2 layers of subfloor) - $17
Toilet Flange - $7

Already Had:
Feather Finish Skimcoat - $16
Marble VCT Tile - $26 per case
Adhesive - $13

Here are some before and afters side by side. I can hardly even remember the grossness!

This challenge was a great low budget remodel that made our house seem just a little bit more lovable, I'd definitely do it again.
