$100 Rom Challenge Week 3 | Open Shelves & Wall Paint

I've decided that the older you get, the faster time goes by! It is Week 3 of the $100 Room Challenge, and somehow I have been able to squeek by with only spending $16 so far. This week, I was able to get all of the painting done, took out the old medicine cabinet mirror, built/installed the two open shelves above the toilet. Catch up with the past two weeks:

Week 1 | The Half Bath Before
Week 2 | Painting the Tile

Open Shelves

The first step was to built the support for the open shelves. This is the second time I built an open shelf, the first being in our laundry room. Both times, I made the support first and then wrapped it with full planks. The support looks like a ladder, but for this project I didn't need a front board as you can see below. I used some old wood from past project so this wood isn't included in the total cost, but you could grab this amount of wood at Home Depot for $10 or so.

Once the support is secured into the studs, I wrapped it with the 1x6 I grabbed from Home Depot for $10. I fastened the boards with finish nails and stained it with my favorite stain, Minwax Early American, which we also had around the house. It turned out better than I thought!

Wall Paint

I debated on the wall color for a few days, should it be a color? should it be black? should it be white? Finally, after many test swatches, I landed on the same paint we used for our upper cabinets in our kitchen: Sherwin William's Ice Cube in Flat Finish. It is a slightly warm-greyish white, which was just enough contrast from the ultra pure white tile.

Ceiling Light

Before painting the ceiling, I spray painted the flushmount that came with the house. It was old, scratched up, and was chipping. So I grabbed my trusty Rustoleum spray paint in Satin Nickle (only $7 at Home Depot) I use for almost everything and gave it a good coating. I didn't count this $7 into my total since I already had it at home. Even though the chrome was pretty and I could have repainted it with the same finish, the faucet and plumbing fixtures are all old, rusty chrome and need to be painted and so it made sense to just paint everything the same color/finish.

For this next (and last!) week, the biggest thing we are going to focus on is the floor. Right now the plan is to use the marble VCT tile we have left over from the kitchen remodel, but first we have to pull up the old gross green stuff. So catch the real-time videos this weekend on my InstaStories and come back next week to see the reveal!

TOTAL (so far): $16
Tile paint - $6
Open shelving wood - $10

Be sure to check out the other bloggers participating this season! It is seriously heating up in everyone's spaces and I can't WAIT for next weeks reveals.

  6. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone! facebook log in facebook
